Pillows have more effect on the way you sleep than you think.
Resting your head on a pillow when you sleep serves two basic functions. A pillow provides support to the sleeper’s neck and upper back when they are resting and they provide a better level of comfort than can be had without a pillow. It is important to consider both factors, as they will both play a role in the quality of your sleep.
Selecting the right pillow for you will be largely dependent on the position that you sleep in the most. For people who sleep on their back, a pillow that supports the natural curve of the neck is best. If you sleep on your side, you will want to find a pillow that keeps your neck straight. And if you sleep on your stomach, you would be best served by a thin pillow or maybe no pillow at all. Beyond sleeping position, choosing a pillow that will fill your needs is mostly about personal preference.
How often should you switch pillows?
There is no said rule, but every six months is the rule of thumb. This is so that your muscles will not be strained. Also, because we spend approximately 1/3rd of our lives asleep, you deserve a new pillow.
Change your pillow case regularly
When it comes to absorbing bacteria, oils, old makeup, sweat, drool, hair products, and all the other human gunk on you, your pillow is like a sponge. Just imagine it, you deposit these materials on your pillowcase all night long, night after night. Your pillow may look clean but, it’s not.
The problem is, even if you start with a clean pillowcase, after a night or two, you’re lying down on old dirt and microorganisms. As these materials meet your face again, they clog pores and encourage inflammation, increasing your chances of waking up with breakouts, or at least carrying around the bacteria that might cause one later.
Sleep is important, it affects your daily life so make sure you’re getting enough of it! It all starts with a pillow.
